Amman: Petra Gateway & Roman Ruins
Amman is Jordan's capital and the gateway to Petra, the Dead Sea, and Wadi Rum. The city is built on seven hills (jabals), which presents challenges for wheelchair users. However, the downtown area around the Roman Theater is relatively flat, and modern western Amman has better sidewalk infrastructure. The Citadel has accessible areas with panoramic views. Jordanians are extraordinarily hospitable — Arab hospitality culture means people will go out of their way to assist. Private drivers are affordable and essential. Petra itself has some accessible areas including battery carts through the Siq canyon to the Treasury.

Private Driver
Essential in Amman and for day trips. 0-50/day for a private car and driver. Hotels can arrange. The drive to Petra is 3 hours, Dead Sea 1 hour, Jerash 1 hour. Having a driver makes all these accessible.
Taxis
Cheap and abundant. Uber and Careem apps work in Amman. Standard taxis can fit folding wheelchairs.
Streets
Amman is very hilly. Downtown is the flattest area. Modern west Amman (Abdoun, Sweifieh) has wider streets. Sidewalks are inconsistent throughout. Use taxis between areas.
Major Attractions
🏛️ Amman Citadel
The hilltop archaeological site has some accessible paths. The Temple of Hercules ruins and panoramic city views are accessible from the main path. Arrive by taxi directly to the entrance. Free for disabled visitors.
🏛️ Roman Theater
A 6,000-seat Roman amphitheater in downtown. The lower seating areas are accessible. The theater floor is flat. An impressive 2nd-century structure still used for events.
🏛️ Petra (Day Trip)
Jordan's crown jewel. Battery-powered carts can take wheelchair users through the 0.75 mi (1.2 km) Siq canyon to the iconic Treasury facade. The Treasury itself involves steps, but the view from the canyon mouth is the famous photo spot and is accessible. Horse-drawn carriages also traverse the Siq. Book accessible tours in advance. 🌊 Dead Sea (Day Trip)
1 hour from Amman. Resort beaches have better accessibility than public ones. The unique experience of floating in the ultra-salty water requires assistance getting in and out, but the sensation is unforgettable. The lowest point on Earth.
