Hakone is Japan's premier mountain resort area — famous for hot springs (onsen), stunning views of Mt. Fuji, art museums, and a scenic loop of transport including cable cars, ropeways, and a pirate ship lake cruise. Just 90 minutes from Tokyo, it's the classic day trip or weekend getaway. For wheelchair travelers, Hakone is surprisingly accessible thanks to Japan's infrastructure standards. The Hakone Tozan Cable Car, Hakone Ropeway, and Lake Ashi pirate ship are all wheelchair accessible. The Hakone Open-Air Museum is designed for wheelchair visitors. Many ryokan (traditional inns) now have accessible rooms with private onsen baths. The Mt. Fuji 5th Station (1.4 mi (2,305 m)) is accessible by bus.

Getting Around

Hakone Free Pass

This pass covers all Hakone Loop transport — Hakone Tozan Railway, cable car, ropeway, pirate ship, and buses. Most of these are wheelchair accessible with staff assistance. The pass also includes discounts at attractions. Buy at Odawara or Hakone-Yumoto stations.

Hakone Loop

The classic sightseeing route: train → cable car → ropeway (over volcanic valley) → pirate ship (across Lake Ashi) → bus back. Each segment accommodates wheelchairs with staff assistance. Call ahead for the ropeway and pirate ship to ensure accessible boarding is prepared.

From Tokyo

Odakyu Romance Car from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto (85 min, accessible with advance booking). Or Shinkansen to Odawara (35 min from Tokyo), then Hakone Tozan Railway. Both routes are wheelchair accessible with ramp assistance.

🗻 Fuji Visibility

Mt. Fuji is shy — cloud cover hides it frequently. Winter (December-February) offers the clearest views. Early morning is better than afternoon. If Fuji is out, every viewpoint becomes extraordinary. If it's hidden, the volcanic valley, lake, and onsen are still wonderful.

Hakone is a natural retreat from Tokyo's intensity — forests, mountains, lake, and hot springs.
