Trains

🏰 Galle Fort
A UNESCO-listed Dutch colonial fort on the southern coast. The rampart walk along the fort walls is partially flat and accessible with ocean views on both sides. The streets inside the fort are flat with boutique hotels, cafés, and galleries. The most accessible historic site in Sri Lanka.
🐘 Udawalawe National Park
Sri Lanka's best park for elephants — herds of 50+ are commonly seen. Game drives are done from jeep vehicles (boarding requires assistance). No need to leave the vehicle. Also home to crocodiles, water buffalo, and hundreds of bird species. The Elephant Transit Home nearby has a viewing platform.
🍵 Tea Country (Nuwara Eliya / Ella)
Emerald tea plantations covering mountain slopes. Tea factory tours (some ground-floor areas accessible) with tasting. The views from your driver's car window as you wind through tea country are among Asia's most beautiful. The scenic train between Kandy and Ella passes through this landscape.
🏖️ South Coast Beaches
Unawatuna, Mirissa, and Tangalle have golden sand beaches with resort accommodation. Some resorts have accessible rooms and beach access. Mirissa is famous for whale watching (boat tours, January-April). The beaches are warm year-round and far less crowded than Southeast Asian equivalents.

Sri Lankan cuisine is extraordinary — rice and curry (multiple small dishes), hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes), string hoppers, and kottu roti (chopped flatbread). The food is naturally spicy. Sri Lanka is compact but roads are slow.
