Zanzibar is an archipelago off Tanzania's coast — a spice-scented paradise of white sand beaches, turquoise Indian Ocean water, and the UNESCO-listed Stone Town with its labyrinthine alleys and carved wooden doors. For wheelchair travelers, the beach resorts on the island's east and north coasts offer the most accessible experience — flat sandy grounds, beachside dining, and some accessible rooms. Stone Town is extremely challenging — narrow, stepped alleys with no curb cuts. However, the spice tours, dolphin tours, and beach experiences make Zanzibar worthwhile. Getting Around
Resort-Based
Stay at a beach resort and use it as your base. The east coast (Paje, Nungwi) has the best beaches. Transfers to/from Stone Town or the airport arranged through your resort. Private taxis available.
Stone Town
Extremely narrow alleys (some barely shoulder-width), steps, uneven stone surfaces. Not wheelchair accessible independently. A guide with a smaller manual chair or viewing from the main roads and waterfront is the most feasible approach. The waterfront (Forodhani Gardens at night) is flatter.

🐬 Dolphin Tour
Boat trips from the south coast to swim with or watch wild dolphins. Boarding the boat requires assistance. The boat ride along the coast and dolphin sighting from the boat is accessible. Swimming is optional.

Stone Town's waterfront food market comes alive at sunset — grilled seafood, Zanzibar pizza, sugarcane juice, and spiced tea. The waterfront area is the most accessible part of Stone Town. A sensory feast of sights, sounds, and smells even if you can't penetrate the narrow alleys beyond.
